The main purpose of the package is to research various types of sensor networks and systems. Basic characteristics are determined and appropriate models are created, which are used for simulation. For the purposes of experimental research, prototypes of sensors are created, which exchange data in a sensor network. The communication processes in sensor networks as well as their application in intelligent educational systems will be studied. The tasks are: (a) Research of the specific characteristics of communication in sensor networks; (b) Research and

creation of models of sensors and sensor networks; (c) Modeling and simulation of communication processes in sensor networks; (d) Research and modeling of sensor networks for application in intelligent educational systems.

The main purpose of the tasks in WP2 is as follows: to perform an analysis of the state of the art and outline modern trends in development of: (1) approaches and methods for adaptive and personalized learning; (2) modeling and machine processing of knowledge related to personalized learning (development  and usage of ontological models), including modeling of the process of personalized learning. The results will be used in (a) development of conceptual models neural network–based models and ontological models of  personalized learning and their verification; (b) in development and evaluation of methods and strategies for  overcoming each student's learning difficulties, based on these models; (c) exploration of the possibilities for  wide application of the proposed models for different learning purposes and in different subject areas.  Optimization strategies and methods will be developed to determine both the most important parameters characterizing the models and the best models in a given context.

WP3. Design and research of an intelligent environment for education

Leader of WP3 is Assist. Prof. Valentina Terzieva-Bogoycheva, PhD from IICT-BAS.

Participants in the implementation of the work package:  Assoc. Prof. Tatyana Ivanova, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Malinka Ivanova, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Svetozar Ilchev, PhD, Senior Assist. Alexander Alexandrov, PhD , (PHASE 1) Ekaterina Otzetova-Dudin, PhD, Assist. Prof. Valentina Terzieva--Bogoycheva, PhD, Assist. Katya Todorova, PhD student Theodor Savov, programmer Stoyan Ivanov

The purpose of the work package is to perform project modeling and research of an intelligent educational system (IES) implemented with the help of sensor networks. The activities include the review and critical analysis of existing ISO solutions, deriving the necessary requirements for them as well as modeling the design and implementation of such an environment by integrating sensor networks and using semantic and other models to create a personalized learning process. Conducting experimental research through simulations and/or prototypes of ISO, in which the sensor networks developed in WP1 provide a continuous flow of data in two aspects: 1) General - reading and control of the physical parameters of the microenvironment (humidity, temperature, oxygen saturation, luminosity, etc.) for the purpose of providing suitable microclimate for the current activities or tasks in order to increase the efficiency of the educational process. 2) Specialized - observation and analysis of students' behavior (movement, eye tracking, etc.), in order to adapt in real time the teaching approach according to the conceptual models developed in WP2.

WP4. Dependability and quality of service in intelligent educational systems and sensor networks

Leader of WP4 is Assist. Prof.  Edita Djambazova, PhD from IICT– BAS.

Participants in the implementation of the work package: Assoc. Prof. Iliyan Petrov, PhD, Assist. Prof. Edita Djambazova, PhD, programmer Stoyan Ivanov, PhD student Pavlin Kutinchev, Eng. Ani Boneva, Assoc. Prof. Valentin Tsenev, PhD

The objective is to do a thorough research of the approaches, methods, and techniques for dependability and quality of service analysis and improvement and to adapt them to the specifics of the platforms and systems for intelligent education both in normal conditions and in case of increased risks of social, technical, and environmental nature. Based on  the interdisciplinary approach for “Model-based system engineering (MBSE)” and the methods of entropy  and hierarchy of information, some refined techniques will be developed for complexity, dependability, and  quality of service assessment. In contrast to the traditional approaches, in the project will be considered and modeled not only the importance of the technical devices and components but also the specific impact of the human factor. The goal of such an integral approach is to make the educational environment more adaptive, to improve the network resilience, and to increase the education effectiveness through development of presence-distance educational methods and through optimized use of the available technical  and human resources in the presence of increased risks. The dependability of a distributed ISO will be modeled and studied. A software product will be developed to simulate system’s operation and to investigate the impact of different environmental factors on its dependability characteristics. Thus, the critical points in  distributed system’s operation will be outlined.

WP5. Dissemination and multiplication of results

Leader of WP5 is Ekaterina Otsetova-Dudin, PhD of IICT-BAS.

Participants in the implementation of the work package:  Assoc. Prof. Iliyan Petrov, PhD,  Assoc. Prof. Rumen Andreev, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Svetozar Ilchev, PhD, Senior Assist. Prof. Alexander Alexandrov (PHASE 1), PhD , Ekaterina Otzetova-Dudin, PhD, Eng. Ani Boneva, Assist. Prof.  Edita Djambazova, PhD, Assist. Prof. Valentina Terzieva, PhD, PhD student Teodor Savov, PhD student Pavlin Kutinchev, Assist. Katya Todorova, Assoc. Prof. Tatyana Ivanova, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Malinka Ivanova, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Valentin Tsenev, PhD, programmer Stoyan Ivanov

WP5 covers tasks associated with promotion, dissemination, and multiplication of the results achieved among the following target groups:  experts in the thematic area; developers of intelligent systems and sensor networks; real customers from the field of education. The respective activities in WP5 refer to presentation of project results among experts and researchers in the thematic area through scientific publications in journals, monographs, proceedings, etc., participation in conferences, workshops, reporting of results from PhD theses, operational prototypes registered as patents/utility models at the Patent Office of the Republic of Bulgaria. Attention will be payed to the promotion, advertisement, and dissemination of the results among the broad community through presentation of project’s results in popular-science publications for the media (newspapers and electronic  media), ensuring access to project results (in the periodically updated project’s internet portal), participation  in national exhibitions. Basic principles for openness and publicity will be observed: periodical announcement and following the activities at the project’s Web portal; periodic reports; accurate reference to the financing programme. At the end of the project period, research results will be systemized in a thematic book and monographs

WP6. Project management plan

The methodology for realization of the project proposal will follow the good practice and project management stages: preparation of management plan; establishment of management structure; planning and update of project tasks (order, resources, duration, etc.); management and control of the execution; control of the schedule, management and evaluation of the costs; project quality control; planning of human  resources, planning of communications and information dissemination; planning of purchases, etc. All project management activities are put in a separate work package – WP6. Project leader will be Assoc. Prof. Iliyan Petrov, PhD – IICT-BAS, while in the activities will take part representatives of the two institutions: Assoc.  Prof. Tatyana Ivanova, PhD – local coordinator for TU – Sofia and Assoc. Prof., Svetozar Ilchev, PhD – local coordinator for IICT-BAS.
